Abu Dhabi, the capital emirate of the United Arab Emirates, witnessed one of its kind gathering of over a thousand and eight hunders badminton enthusiasts on the 5th of July as part of the BWF’s World Badminton Day celebrations.

Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Abu Dhabi Racket Club joined hands with UAE Badminton Federation to bring competitive players and badminton communities together to experience fun and inclusive badminton through a variety of active, engaging, and innovative badminton activities as part of the World Badminton Day celebrations, at the ADNEC, Abu Dhabi. Badminton World Federation (BWF) celebrates World Badminton Day every 5th of July, commemorating the formation of the apex body of badminton on the same day in 1934.

Around 250 junior male and female players Under 13 to Under 17 age groups competed in competitive junior badminton events. In the senior section, about 400 male and female players competed in several categories and skill levels over the ten competition courts set up at the ADNEC facility. Players from Special Olympics UAE also participated in the Unified Doubles competitions.

Alongside the competitions, there were six additional badminton courts dedicated to beginner players to experience badminton, learn basic movements and shots, and enjoy some friendly games. BWF’s Shuttle Time tutors engaged over 1000 novice badminton players with training drills and fun games. The activity is aims to leave a lasting legacy by rasing the profile of the sport and distubiting more than 1000 rackets to the schools and coummity in the coming months.

The event’s highlight was the signing of an MOU between the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Abu Dhabi Racket Club (ADRC) to establish a collaborative framework between the BWF and ADRC to promote the development and growth of badminton in Abu Dhabi. Mr. Ian Wright, Development Director at BWF, signed the MOU with Mr. Abdulrahman Al-Menhali of ADRC.
